For those of you that don’t know, once a year everyone within the game industry gets together for three days. Electronic Entertainment Expo is just around the corner, my friends. Three glorious days of seeing the newest of the new, the things all sixteen year-olds would piss themselves to see but can’t because it’s industry only and 18+. The last year I went was 2004 and I could only be up there for a day, but that didn’t stop me from seeing everything (I did miss out on the matrix online beta sign up, but no sweat off my nerdy back, shit was suppose to be terrible anyways). There’s this unpublished secret of E3, that all the nerds know. FACT: You can walk out with at least a three week wardrobe, posters to fill your mothers basement, and squishy toys, pens, and random trinkets to show how 1337 you really are to all four of your friends.
Do people that work in your IT department wear video game or video game company shirts to work every day and seem like they don’t have anything else to wear? It’s because they don’t actually buy clothes, they just wait for the three days of pillaging. When the doors open nerds will run in to be the first to grab stuff, it’s out of control, I once saw two 35+ year old, fat, and balding white dudes push each other to play the new thing put out by Square.
It was the year they showed off Katamari Damacy for the first time to the US audience and I fell in love. There hasn’t been a game since that captured the same feeling. It was the last game I enjoyed playing. Sure, I played WoW and had some fun here and there, who didn’t? I played at launch, quit, I started again, quit, one more time… it was really fun, quit, etc. Whatever, I just don’t get the same feeling from playing video games like I used to when I was younger. However, it was the music, gameplay, and concept of Katamari that kept me playing and so inthralled that I had dreams about it. How often does that happen? Consoles were cool, most memorable games would be Dr.Mario, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VII, Smash Bros, and Katamari Damacy. I just borrowed my buddy Jeremy’s PS2 to play Shadow of the Colossus which is amazing… but can’t get into it. I was mostly a PC gamer, SC:Broodwar, Diablo II, and Counter Strike (a bit of CS:S, but it wasn’t the same). I loved Half Life 2. That game will go down in history as the only game I spent over $2k for just to play, for sure.
I can’t wait for Spore, I really can’t. It’s an exciting new front in video games, and should provide hours and hours of nothing but time wasting fun.
That’s all. I got my new issue of dwell today, I recommend picking it up. Oh, and listen to The Lovely Feathers, Gnarls Barkley, and Cities. Thanks.
